5. JewishGen

Use this free site to find American newspapers from 1690 to the present day or search historic newspaper pages from 1770-1963. I've found some real treasures in this database.

This site is managed by volunteers of local and state genealogical societies throughout the United States, making it a great resource, especially for small-town news, burial lists and photos, and other info you may not find in a records search. You can also visit the WorldGenWeb Project site for international records.

After the Civil War, The Freedman's Bureau was established to help slaves who were set free and poor whites with provisions, clothing, and fuel. The Freedmen's Bureau Search Portal is a great resource for learning about the impact of slavery and Reconstruction in the US. It lets you search multiple data sets in one place with highlighted matches for easy access to information.

JewishGen is an easy-to-use website with surname search and phonetic search algorithms for Eastern European and Jewish family look-ups. Note that some databases require payment.
